The Will
The will reading took place three days later at a law office in White Plains.
The same gray-suited attorney sat at the head of a long polished table.
My father and mother sat together on one side.
Vanessa sat beside them, scrolling through her phone.
I sat alone on the other side.
Mr. Kramer opened a folder.
“As you know,” he began, “Eleanor Whitaker left a substantial estate, including investment accounts, art, jewelry, and property holdings.”
Vanessa finally looked up.
My mother leaned forward slightly.
