Allison carefully buckled her seat belt.
The woman let out another sigh.
Then she said, loudly enough for several nearby passengers to hear, « Your mother should’ve bought you two tickets. »
Allison blinked.
« What? »
« You’re taking up more than one seat. »
The words hung in the air.
My daughter immediately pulled her elbows closer to her sides, as though making herself smaller could somehow erase what she’d just heard.
« I’m sorry, » she whispered.
I was already unbuckling my purse from my shoulder.
