I lowered my gaze to the paperwork before looking back up at him.
“A terrible investment?”
Nathan sighed as though even the question annoyed him.
“Please don’t start acting like some innocent victim. When we met, you were working behind the counter of a neighborhood coffee shop. I genuinely thought I was rescuing you. I thought you would appreciate becoming the wife of CloudAxis’s CEO, but the truth is you never belonged in my world.”
He settled back comfortably before continuing.
“You never learned how to dress properly for charity galas. You couldn’t hold a real conversation with investors. Every business dinner became embarrassing because you always looked completely out of place.”
Madison finally lifted her eyes from her phone and smiled.
“She really was embarrassing,” she added. “Remember when she served homemade beef stew at dinner with the marketing directors? I’ve never seen executives look so uncomfortable.”
Nathan laughed immediately.
“That was unforgettable.”
